On May 18 the city is quiet, much like the 5th of July in the States. This is especially true when the big holiday falls on a Friday. Today our cousin Torhild picked us up at the dock in Trondheim and took us to see the big cathedral and to her home for lunch. We’re in the same age range so we talked about our kids, a little politics (just a little) and the amazing healthcare and education systems available in Norway – cradle to grave (Paid with taxes as her husband was quick to point out). We connected instantly and became fast friends. All three of us wish we could have had more time. We left saying “next time!”
It is 10:10 PM as I write this and the sun is finally setting. We are in the land of the midnight sun to be sure.
Tomorrow we are taking a couple of excursions – one is to the Saltstraumen which is one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. Homer (cousin from California) told us to check it out if at all possible, so we’re definitely going. In the evening we will tour the Lofoten Islands. More about our big day in tomorrow’s post.
Note: for brevity I refer to all our relatives as cousins in these posts. They are technically our mom’s first cousins (Ellen, Gustav) and children/spouses- Vanessa, Torhild, Homer. I hope no one is offended or has the urge to correct me. I really do know my family tree.
