After our day in Kirkennes we flew to Oslo, spent the night and flew out very early back to Alesund for a two-day family whirlwind. Gustav picked us up at the airport and drove us around to neighboring islands and the small settlement and the church where our Grandpa Ole was baptized. We also saw the house he grew up in on the Flisnes peninsula where Gustav, his wife Elsa and their two sons Havard (pronounced “Hovard”) and Erling and their wives Yvonne and Annbjorg all have homes. We spent several pleasant hours with both sons (technically our second cousins) and went out on Erling’s new boat touring the fjords that can be seen from their house.
We gathered so much family history; we feel fortunate to have seen and spent a good amount of time visiting with everyone.I’ll be able to list the names of the Fjords and Islandsonce I’m back in the states with maps in front of me.Our final leg of this journey will be to visit Sykkelven and Geiranger where my Grandmother Berit was raised.
